Jules and Lawrence Duffy considered themselves lucky Discount RTA Cabinets that their Jersey Shore, New Jersey, vacation home survived Hurricane Sandy in 2012 with only the basement destroyed. But in January 2014, they got a call from a neighbor: Water was pouring out of their kitchen. A pipe had burst eight days earlier, and the kitchen was wrecked. So couple renovated, taking the kitchen down to the studs and creating a sparkling new dream kitchen. But six months after they finished — just a year after the first pipe break — five more pipes burst and destroyed their newly renovated kitchen. And so the couple had to begin again with a new renovation. “We are definitely talking about changing our winterization strategy,” Jules says. "Photos by Laura Moss The picture at left shows the kitchen today. After the second pipe Discount RTA Cabinets burst, the one thing that survived was the durable chipped travertine floor. “This floor shows nothing. We come in with sandy feet all the time,” Jules says. It has five sizes of tiles in driftwood tones, which set the warm neutral palette for the room. After having lived with a marine blue and bright green kitchen before the renovations, Jules wanted a different color palette. “I knew I wanted to go with driftwood neutrals and then bring in color with accessories — navy blue, turquoise and some pops of coral,” she says. The countertops around the perimeter are the standard 1¼-inch thickness, Discount RTA Cabinets and the steel gray granite contrasts all of the light colors. “This granite has a beautiful crystal pattern in it that sparkles, while the honed finish makes it really durable,” Jules says. An important part of both renovations was carving out a mudroom, something many houses this age lack. “We used to trip over shoes we’d kicked off by the door and dump things on the table Discount RTA Cabinets all the time,” Jules says. Now the lower baskets corral all the flip-flops, and the upper baskets hold phones for charging (she installed plugs here for that purpose). Cubbies equipped with hooks and baskets keep beach towels, shoes, sunscreen, hats and bags organized next to the door. “The nook was really important — we have lots of kids coming and going constantly, and kids love banquette seating,” the designer says. The eat-in area takes advantage of the expanse of Discount RTA Cabinets windows, and the family love to eat, read and work on their laptops here. Horizontal tongue-and-groove paneling ties the area to the mudroom and adds a beach-house touch. Pillows bring in brighter colors. “I knew I needed upper cabinet space, but I wanted to balance the windows on the other wall with a sense of openness,” Jules says. She kept a few open shelves backed with the subway tile backsplash rather than adding a third cabinet along this wall. The shelves are a great place to display accessories, adding texture and color. Discount RTA Cabinets The breadbox is a beloved piece the designer has had “forever,” she says. It is always too tall to fit into cabinets, so she planned this space to fit it on the counter. The family keep their bread in it. The three-tiered pastry rack has three favorite antique purple transferware plates, which hold fresh goods from the bakery during breakfast or veggies from the farmers market.Jules Duffy Designs“Having to do the renovation Discount RTA Cabinets twice was quite an experience,” Duffy says. “But we feel thankful and blessed to have the new kitchen.”"
